The San Francisco 49ers have agreed to a one-year extension with right tackle Colton McKivitz that will run through the 2025 season. The extension is reportedly valued at $7 million, as per his agents at AMDG Sports. Previously expected to draft a tackle in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft, the 49ers’ decision to extend McKivitz’s contract may alter their strategy. McKivitz, at 27 years old, was the starting right tackle for the 49ers in the 2023-2024 season, during which he performed adequately, allowing 9 sacks and receiving a grade of 65.1 from Pro Football Focus. While the 49ers may seek to add competition for McKivitz, they made it to the Super Bowl with him in this role. Despite the extension, the 49ers are anticipated to pursue a tackle in the upcoming draft, aiming to enhance their offensive line. The extension does not necessarily indicate that McKivitz will remain the long-term starter, as it was not a high-value contract. Therefore, the 49ers may still seek to acquire a rookie tackle to compete with or potentially replace McKivitz. Looking ahead, the 49ers will monitor the free agent market for opportunities to upgrade or provide competition for McKivitz, while remaining mindful of their budget constraints.
