During Saturday’s game against the Edmonton Oilers, Toronto Maple Leafs’ goaltender Ilya Samsonov went down with an odd injury. While stretching from one post to another, awkwardly tweaked something and didn’t get up. He laid face down on the ice for some time and Martin Jones had to eventually come in as a replacement. It wasn’t clear what he did, but it looked pretty bad based on his reaction. The Maple Leafs provided an update after the game.
Samsonov appeared to have a lower-body injury while stretching to make a save, but it seems the pain was not too serious as he will not miss any games. Despite his discomfort against the Oilers, he stayed in the game and eventually led the Capitals to a 6-3 victory. Although Edmonton made a late push with three goals in the third period, it was not enough to overcome the deficit. In the end, Jones replaced Samsonov in goal. The Maple Leafs will face the Hurricanes next, with Joseph Woll expected to start in goal. Samsonov has been performing well since his time in the AHL, with a record of 14-4, a .910 SV%, and a 2.53 GAA.
