Terique Owens is not done with the San Francisco 49ers.
The 49ers have invited the former Missouri State wide receiver, who is the son of Hall of Fame WR Terrell Owens, to a local pro day, according to Matt Barrows of the Athletic.
The University of Missouri was hosting a pro day, and the 49ers were already there. According to reports, Owens trained and completed the 40-meter dash in 4.51 seconds, with a 38.5 vertical and a 10-4 broad jump. A query posed in the comments section asks whether the attendees were expecting to see Owens in particular, Owens plus a few other Missouri State players, or other players and Owens just so happened to be in the building.
If the latter, then it’s similar way that led to Dwight Clark getting drafted. Bill Walsh wanted to visit Clemson and take a look at quarterback Steve Fuller, Clark was walking out the door when the phone rang. Walsh said he needed a pass catcher. They worked out Fuller, and then Clark went with Walsh to watch tape—without Steve Fuller.
Getting a local invite may indicate the 49ers saw something in Owens that made them want another look. On the same token, we’ll see how much of a look they give. Tom Brady got invited to a similar pro day with the 49ers before the 2000 NFL Draft and you know how that went.
