Prior to the draft, Panthers general manager Dan Morgan stated that the team had been in communication with free agency cornerback Stephon Gilmore and that they may finalise a deal following the draft. But it appears that no agreement will be reached anytime soon.
According to TheAthletic.com, Gilmore and the Panthers have not advanced towards a contract agreement, and nothing is happening at this time.
Although it sounds like something that will happen closer to the start of training camp in late July, if it happens at all, Gilmore’s return to the Panthers is not completely implausible.
There is a strong Carolina connection as Gilmore was born and reared in South Carolina and played collegiate football for the Gamecocks. He also had a one-year stint as a player for the Panthers in 2021. But Gilmore might not be a very appealing acquisition for the Panthers or any other team right now, given his age of thirty-three and his recent shoulder surgery.
Gilmore started all 17 of the Cowboys’ games last season. He has started all of his NFL seasons, spending five with the Bills, four with the Patriots, and one with each of the Panthers, Colts, and Cowboys. Even if his NFL career is definitely coming to an end, he would still have something to say.
