Rashaad Penny, a former running back for the Philadelphia Eagles, was reportedly signed by the Panthers on Monday. The news was initially reported by ESPN.
This brings Penny and Panthers head coach Dave Canales back together. For the first five years of the running back’s career, they lived together in Seattle. But with nine running backs on the roster, it puts the Panthers in an odd position.
That is why the Panthers’ move is so puzzling. Carolina already has a talented running back in Chuba Hubbard. In 2023, he set a team record for rushing yards and showed signs of eagerness to take the lead once more.
Jonathan Brooks, a running back, was the next player Carolina selected in the second round. Despite Brooks’ ACL tear, it is expected he will be ready to play in the 2024 season.
Miles Sanders, another former Eagles running back, is still on the team. Sanders signed a long-term contract with Carolina in the 2023 offseason. He still hasn’t lived up to the cash.
The roster also includes former Pro Bowl player Tarik Cohen, Mike Boone, Spencer Brown, and Raheem Blackshear. Tossing in another running back didn’t seem like a need.
However, Carolina sees no issues with adding one more name to an already crowded position—at least for the time being.
