After wrapping up OTAs and Mandatory Minicamp, the focus now shifts to the upcoming training camp at St. John Fisher University in late July. Here are six key storylines to watch as camp approaches.
1 – Job opportunities abound
The Bills have experienced significant changes in their roster this offseason, leading to several starting and backup positions up for grabs on both offense and defense.
Wide receiver positions, in particular, will see adjustments in the depth chart with the absence of last year’s top two receivers, Stefon Diggs and Gabe Davis. This shift opens up opportunities for other receivers on the team.
On defense, there are vacancies at starting defensive end, cornerback, and both safety positions due to roster changes. Additional openings may arise during training camp, setting the stage for intense competition at St. John Fisher this year.
2 – Accelerating the learning process
As training camp approaches, there will be a lot of chemistry to build on the offense. Despite most receivers not having caught a pass from Josh Allen last season, he is working hard to speed up the process of getting them accustomed to his playing style.
With new changes expected in the offensive scheme under coordinator Joe Brady, Allen understands the need to build a strong connection quickly. He plans to schedule practices with his receivers before training camp to ensure they all understand the new concepts and play styles.
Allen emphasizes the importance of open communication and continuous improvement, aiming to expedite the team’s cohesion before the season begins.
A lot of experienced players have left the team, creating a need for new leaders to step up. Terrel Bernard has shown potential as a leader on defense, while Taron Johnson and Taylor Rapp are also emerging as vocal leaders. Head coach Sean McDermott is impressed with Rapp’s ability to adapt and lead in the secondary. On offense, Josh Allen could be supported by Dion Dawkins, Mack Hollins, and Connor McGovern as potential leaders. McDermott praises McGovern’s leadership role on the offensive line and his alignment with the coaching staff.
