Unexpectedly, Buffalo Bills head coach Sean McDermott was included in a recent CBS Sports list of eight NFL head coaches they think could be fired in 2024. McDermott, who is starting his eighth season as the Bills’ head coach, was formerly the defensive coordinator for the Carolina Panthers from 2011 to 2016.
Not only is McDermott descended from Andy Reid, but his head coaching background virtually emulates Reid’s early Philadelphia Eagles career, in which success in the regular season and a strong locker room culture were eclipsed only by the team’s inability to go to the championship game. That’s why it’s difficult to imagine Buffalo seriously considering a move up top. Despite this, in five seasons, McDermott’s teams have only made it to one AFC championship game with MVP-caliber quarterback Josh Allen at the position. With a reorganised roster under his command, the coach’s future looks less certain than normal.
While McDermott hasn’t led the Bills to a Super Bowl yet, his teams have been dominant in the AFC East for the past four seasons, only failing to win the division in 2019. Considering his successful track record, it seems odd to even mention the possibility of him being on the “hot seat”. Despite facing tough competition, McDermott’s winning record speaks for itself. Although the Bills have fallen short in the playoffs, they consistently reach the postseason with potential to achieve their ultimate goal. Sticking with McDermott is crucial as he continues to provide the team with strong chances for Super Bowl success, and contemplating his removal would be a foolish decision.
