Expert football executives and coaches frequently say that the basis for a consistently competitive team is laid throughout the offensive and defensive lines. They believe that long-term success begins in the trenches.
Since general manager Brandon Beane and head coach Sean McDermott took over in 2017, the Buffalo Bills have adhered to this philosophy. They have completely rebuilt both units in their image, and as a result, they have been consistent and productive over the course of the previous few seasons. With the exception of veteran centre Mitch Morse, the offensive line, in particular, is expected to return four starters for the 2024 campaign: right guard O’Cyrus Torrence, left tackle Spencer Brown, left guard (and now centre) Connor McGovern, and left tackle Dion Dawkins.
As he approaches the final year of his four-year rookie contract, Brown is possibly the most intriguing name among the returning starters. An athletic marvel who was selected in the third round of the 2021 NFL Draft out of Division 1 FCS school Northern Iowa, Brown is coming off of his best season as a professional, starting all 17 games for Buffalo while showcasing improved pass protection and run blocking abilities. Brown’s contract situation is an intriguing one to follow in an organisation that doesn’t mind getting ahead of the curve and giving ascending players contracts that they feel they’ll “play into;” Bleacher Report’s Ryan Fowler believes that Buffalo should extend Brown this summer, identifying the 26-year-old as an extension candidate in an article
Buffalo, with $10.1 million in cap space, has the option to extend Spencer Brown if they choose to. Brown has been a consistent presence at right tackle in his first three seasons in the NFL, offering good value to the team since being drafted in the third round. Despite some shortcomings in his performance in 2023, maintaining cohesion among the offensive line is crucial for overall success. An extension averaging close to $7 million per year is a possibility for Brown.
