Caitlin Clark is enjoying a remarkable debut season with the Indiana Fever in the WNBA. She has positioned the team for a playoff chance for the first time since 2016 and has set various records seemingly in every game, excelling in shooting, passing, and even achieving the league’s first rookie triple-double. However, the former Iowa Hawkeyes standout can occasionally be overly competitive, frequently voicing her complaints to the referees throughout the season.
Iowa coach Jan Jensen would likely concur with this sentiment. In a recent interview, she discussed her experience coaching Clark, likening her personality to that of a “toddler.”
“I think it’s a bit like parenting,” Jensen explained. “At times, her behavior resembles that of a toddler. There are moments when you need to address it immediately, and other times, you’ll deal with it later… [Clark] challenges us, and we have had to expand our knowledge and experiences.”
Jensen continued by disclosing the secret to mentoring Clark.
“When we were recruiting her, you would see some of those eruptions,” Jensen continued. The secret is that we’re trying to tame her, not shatter her. I believe we succeeded. With Indiana, they are now beginning to pursue her. They’re beginning to say, “All right.”
