Max Pacioretty, a veteran forward, has been formally announced by the Toronto Maple Leafs to join training camp as a professional tryout (PTO). This action is a component of the team’s plan to add seasoned players without committing right away. Pacioretty’s fit will be assessed before he may sign a short-term contract ahead of the 2024–25 season.
After the Leafs successfully negotiated a one-year extension for Nick Robertson—a young winger who was previously believed to be in danger of receiving an offer sheet—talks between the team and the unrestricted free agent had been moving towards this PTO, according to David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period on Tuesday. If all goes according to plan, he continues, and Toronto can generate cap space through possible trades, a one-year contract for Pacioretty is anticipated. Attention has now turned to further roster transactions, including Pacioretty’s possible signing. TSN’s Darren Dreger stated that defenseman Jani Hakanpaa could be another player the Leafs are considering.
Although Toronto is eager to acquire Pacioretty, TSN Hockey Insider Chris Johnston revealed that other teams have expressed interest in the forward. Should another team present Pacioretty with a guaranteed contract, a PTO will give him the opportunity to sign with that team.
According to Johnston, Pacioretty must decide which chance best fits his professional aspirations; at this point, it seems to be the Maple Leafs, but nothing is final. According to Frank Seravalli, Robertson might yet be traded before the season begins, freeing up a spot for Pacioretty to join the squad. That may be among the factors for Pacioretty’s decision to use a PTO. He is considering joining the team that gives the best chance of making the squad if he sees one.
