Reaching a contract extension for wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk before Week 1 was a necessary move for the team. Consequently, San Francisco considered backup options to bolster its roster prior to facing the New York Jets.
According to Mike Silver of the San Francisco Chronicle, the 49ers reached out to the Las Vegas Raiders about former New England Patriots receiver Jakobi Meyers. However, the Raiders were not inclined to trade Meyers after a promising debut season in which the 27-year-old recorded 71 catches on 106 targets for 807 yards and eight touchdowns over 16 games.
“San Francisco’s attempts to acquire Meyers were met with resistance from the Raiders,” reported Silver.
While Meyers is not the top receiving option in Las Vegas—that role belongs to six-time Pro Bowler Davante Adams—his youth and efficiency make him an asset the Raiders are not eager to part with. Meyers signed a three-year, $33 million contract with Las Vegas last offseason, concluding his four-year tenure in New England. In the Raiders’ 22-10 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 1, he led the team with 61 receiving yards, surpassing Adams, who had 59 yards but with two fewer receptions.
On the flip side, Aiyuk had a disappointing performance following an offseason dispute with the front office and his absence from training camp. After signing a four-year, $120 million extension, the 26-year-old managed only 28 yards on two catches and dropped a potential touchdown pass in the final moments of the second quarter during San Francisco’s 32-19 victory over the Jets. His lackluster performance was so disheartening that Aiyuk felt “scared” to review game film, a stark contrast to the substantial $79 million guaranteed salary the 49ers invested in him.
