The training camp for the Canadiens commenced with a wave of optimism, as many insiders believe the team has a shot at contention.
However, this upbeat sentiment isn’t reflected across the league, with several analysts predicting that the team may again land near the bottom of the standings. The Hockey News recently published its forecasts for the season, indicating another disappointing year for the Canadiens. Their projected rankings show them in last place in the Atlantic Division:
1- Florida Panthers
2- Toronto Maple Leafs
3- Boston Bruins
4- Ottawa Senators
5- Tampa Bay Lightning
6- Detroit Red Wings
7- Buffalo Sabres
8- Montreal Canadiens
Adam Proteau, who crafted these predictions, acknowledges that Kent Hughes has been effective in making the team competitive through various trades and draft picks. Yet, he believes they are still a couple of years away from playoff contention.
He mentions that under coach Martin St. Louis, the Canadiens will be more challenging opponents, but they still have much progress to make before vying for a playoff spot. The focus on internal development will be crucial, and while escaping the bottom of the Atlantic would be an impressive feat, even if they remain at the division’s tail, brighter days seem to be on the horizon.
Personally, I think Proteau is quite tough on the Canadiens. While they may not be playoff-ready, predicting them to finish last in the Atlantic raises some questions for me.
Last season, before it began, he had the Vancouver Canucks ranked 6th in the Pacific, yet they ended up 1st with 109 points. This demonstrates how challenging it can be to make accurate predictions!
Regardless of where the Canadiens finish, my hope is to see noticeable development from the players and heightened intensity. If the team can deliver entertaining games and a legitimate chance to win, it will be a successful season.
Should this prediction hold true, however, Montreal could again secure a high draft pick, making the lottery an exciting event to follow.
Just think if they could land James Hagens as part of their rebuilding process!
