The New York Rangers are the center of attention in the hockey world this season, recognized as one of the leading contenders for the Stanley Cup in the Eastern Conference as they aim to take on the reigning champion Florida Panthers.
In addition to their high expectations for the season, the Rangers are involved in two contract situations that have caught the league’s interest. The most talked-about negotiation is with goaltender Igor Shesterkin, who recently declined an eight-year contract offer valued at $88 million.
Meanwhile, the Rangers also need to reach a new agreement with Alexis Lafreniere, the former first-overall pick, who is in the final season of his current contract. This summer, he will inevitably sign a new deal. Last season, the 22-year-old winger realized the offensive potential many had anticipated, scoring 28 goals, 29 assists, and totaling 57 points over 82 games.
While the Rangers are excited about Lafreniere’s development, this progress complicates their contract discussions. NHL insider Frank Seravalli reported that negotiations with Lafreniere are ongoing, with multiple options still being explored. He shared via his X account the latest updates, writing, “Talks ongoing. Different options on table. One of them: 8 years x $8 mil range.”
A $64 million deal would mark a significant increase for Lafreniere, who is finishing a two-year contract with an average annual value of $2.35 million. He has exceeded expectations during his time with the Rangers over the last two seasons.
Though he is only 22, Lafreniere has gained valuable experience, having played 299 NHL games where he has scored 76 goals, provided 74 assists, and notched 150 points. After performing as a 40 to 50-point player early in his career, his breakout season last year suggests that he could become a top-six scorer in New York. This level of production justifies a considerable payday, and the contract he eventually signs may surpass current projections.
