The NHL season for 2024-2025 has begun, and Samuel Montembeault is stepping into the role of the primary goalie for the Montreal Canadiens.
Originally from Bécancour, Montembeault was selected by the Florida Panthers in the third round of the 2015 draft. After only 25 games with Florida, he got a fresh opportunity when the Canadiens claimed him off waivers in October 2021. Since joining Montreal, he has established a significant presence on the team. Following Carey Price’s injury and Jake Allen’s exit, Montembeault has emerged as a dependable goaltender for the Canadiens.
He has recently addressed the internal competition he faces with younger goalies like Jakub Dobes, Jacob Fowler, and Cayden Primeau. Although he acknowledges that competing with these rising talents can be tough, it only fuels his desire to maintain his status as the team’s top goalie. With a new three-year contract worth $9.45 million, Montembeault remains humble and recognizes the challenges of each game, aiming to help his team reach the playoffs and stay competitive throughout the season.
Montembeault is determined to defend his position and realize his dream of being the Canadiens’ goaltender. In my opinion, he truly deserves this number one spot and the attention that comes with it. I also believe he will consistently outperform Cayden Primeau, despite Primeau’s youth and perceived potential, much like Jakub Dobes.
