On Monday, those of us at the Blackhawks’ practice at Fifth Third Arena were eager for an update on the roster ahead of Tuesday night’s game against the Vancouver Canucks. We were particularly curious about the availability of Pat Maroon and Joey Anderson. However, it was clear that Philipp Kurashev would not be a healthy scratch.
During the practice, Kurashev and Anderson were seen in black jerseys, and as the team ran through line rushes, Kurashev appeared to be excluded from the lineup. After practice, head coach Luke Richardson confirmed Kurashev wouldn’t be playing in Tuesday’s game, explaining:
“I’ve gotten used to relying on him, but he needs to elevate his performance from the last game for that to continue. I believe this will serve as a wake-up call for him and he’ll improve.”
Kurashev, 25, had an impressive season last year, primarily playing alongside Connor Bedard, setting new personal bests in offensive stats. However, he has struggled as the Blackhawks’ main second-line center this season, with his scoring opportunities limited. In the three games since his first goal of the season in Edmonton, he has managed just one shot on goal and has recorded four penalty minutes while also having a minus-four rating.
