The New York Rangers have sent forward Matt Rempe to their AHL affiliate, the Hartford Wolf Pack, to increase the 22-year-old’s playing time. According to Frank Seravalli of Daily Faceoff, this move is expected to aid Rempe’s development by giving him opportunities to get more ice time and enhance his skills.
Rempe has had difficulty making an impact at the start of the Rangers’ 2024-25 season. He has been a healthy scratch in three of the first five games and, although he played against the Toronto Maple Leafs, he has not scored any points this season. Head coach Peter Laviolette has limited Rempe’s ice time, reducing his chances to demonstrate that he can contribute beyond just being an enforcer.
Reactions from fans on social media regarding Rempe’s demotion were mixed. Some were critical, posting comments like “Good riddance” and “Send him to Bloomington.” Others had a more measured view, with one user stating, “It’s better off he needs playing time, and we need more scoring depth on that fourth line.” Another added, “Absolutely the right move. He’s fun and a good kid but not NHL caliber.”
Although this may appear to be a setback, the opportunity to play in Hartford could help Rempe refine his skills. If he gains confidence and improves his performance in the AHL, he may have the chance to return to the Rangers.
Rempe is a distinctive player—big, tough, and fast—who could be a valuable asset in the NHL if he learns to contribute without being a liability. For now, however, his opportunity to prove himself will need to wait.
