Igor Shesterkin, the goaltender for the New York Rangers, is approaching contract negotiations, and it’s clear he stands to earn a significant amount.
Previously, Shesterkin declined an eight-year offer worth $88 million from the Rangers, which would have provided him $11 million annually and set a major precedent in the goaltending market. However, it seems Shesterkin is aiming for around $12 million per year, a truly substantial request.
According to RG.org, he is expected to secure a deal that meets his demands, with some sources suggesting that his leverage could push his salary to upwards of $12.5 million annually. While this figure seems high, the increasing salary cap might justify it.
With several goaltenders, like Linus Ullmark and Jeremy Swayman, earning around $8.25 million per year, it’s hard to envision a goalie surpassing the $12 million mark. Yet, this scenario highlights just how skilled Shesterkin is.
Ultimately, the Rangers’ next steps remain uncertain. If the team wins a Stanley Cup before renegotiating, they will likely feel compelled to compensate their goalie accordingly. Even now, Shesterkin has demonstrated that he is among the best in the NHL.
