The 49ers have squandered a few significant leads this season, so their 17-point advantage over the Cowboys at the beginning of the fourth quarter on Sunday night didn’t exactly reassure anyone about the outcome.
The unfolding fourth quarter added to the tension, as the Cowboys narrowed the gap to six points with two touchdowns from wide receiver CeeDee Lamb. Dallas regained possession with three minutes remaining, presenting them with a chance to secure a win. Ultimately, the 49ers forced four consecutive incompletions, clinching a 30-24 victory, but linebacker Fred Warner didn’t take pride in the performance afterward.
“I was frustrated, obviously; we made it a game when it didn’t need to be, especially on defense,” Warner stated, as reported by 49ersWebzone.com. “They didn’t really earn those points. 88 [Lamb] was wide open, being their best player. We can’t allow that. We put ourselves in that position, so we had to figure a way out. It was about going out and finishing the game, and we did that.”
While the 49ers have faced challenges, no team has decisively taken control of the NFC West, and they can look forward to improved health in the latter part of the season. Thus, the frustrations of the early months may soon shift to optimism about the future in San Francisco.
