Leading up to the regular season, analysts portrayed the Buffalo Bills’ receiving corps as a mismatched group. Without Stefon Diggs, they consistently ranked low in preseason assessments of wide receiver units, with experts labeling them as lacking a definitive WR1 and star talent.
Fast forward to eight weeks into the season, the Bills stand at 6-2, Khalil Shakir has stepped up as a strong primary target, and the acquisition of Amari Cooper has bolstered the squad. Since adding Cooper, Buffalo has won both of their games decisively, with two different receivers achieving over 100 receiving yards: rookie Keon Coleman had 125 yards against the Tennessee Titans, and Shakir followed with 107 yards against the Seattle Seahawks.
Despite missing a game due to an ankle injury, Shakir leads the team in receiving yards with 421. Having caught 36 out of 38 targets, he believes the receiver group deserves recognition among the best in the league. “I truly believe it’s one of the best in the NFL. We know that,” Shakir remarked after the 31-10 victory in Seattle. “We put our heads down and work through the week to be ready for gameday, whatever challenges we face.”
Moreover, all receivers contribute effectively in blocking and can pose a threat at any moment. Veteran Mack Hollins exemplifies this, having scored two touchdowns on just seven receptions. “In our receiver room, anyone can step up on any play and make a significant impact. Our group is incredibly dynamic,” Shakir noted.
Overall, the performance of a unit deemed ineffective without Diggs has exceeded expectations in the first half of the season.
