The Buffalo Bills are likely feeling confident after two consecutive blowout victories, but their defense might soon see the return of two crucial players as they prepare to face the Miami Dolphins.
Recently, the Bills’ defense has performed impressively, restricting both the Tennessee Titans and Seattle Seahawks to just 10 points each. The Titans’ offense has been inconsistent this season, alternating between Mason Rudolph and Will Levis. Buffalo limited Tennessee to a mere 289 total yards. The Seahawks posed a greater challenge, with Geno Smith, who leads the NFL in passing yards (2,197) and attempts (308), but the Bills managed to restrict him to only 212 yards with an interception and a fumble. Overall, they held the Seahawks to 233 total yards, showcasing their defensive prowess.
Help may soon arrive for the Bills’ defense in Week 9, particularly with the return of veteran pass rusher Von Miller, who is set to come back after completing a four-game suspension for violating the NFL’s personal conduct policy. While Miller did not have double-digit sacks in his brief time on the field before the suspension, his presence provided essential rest periods for starters Greg Rousseau and A.J. Epenesa. During his absence, the defense turned to rookies Javon Solomon and DeWayne Carter, with Solomon contributing two sacks and a forced fumble. Miller’s return is expected to allow the defense to function as head coach Sean McDermott intended, especially as they enter the crucial middle of the season.
In addition, the Bills may also be bolstered by the potential return of starting linebacker Terrel Bernard, who has been recovering from injury. Bernard had a strong performance in Week 1 against the Arizona Cardinals but was injured in the second game against the Dolphins and missed two subsequent games. He managed to play the next three but missed last week’s matchup in Seattle. Although he returned to practice this week, his availability for Sunday remains uncertain. Bernard’s presence would alleviate some leadership pressure on second-year linebacker Dorian Williams, who has stepped up but is less adept in pass coverage than Bernard, who has recorded three interceptions this season.
As the 2024 NFL trade deadline approaches next Tuesday, the Bills could be looking to enhance their defensive unit across all positions. Bringing in a strategic addition like Amari Cooper might similarly benefit the defense. With key players potentially returning just in time for a significant AFC East game against the Dolphins, the Bills will be better informed about their strategy at the deadline. Given Miller’s ability to make an impact even in limited action, Buffalo may choose to focus its efforts elsewhere, especially considering Bernard’s injury history. Regardless, the potential return of these two defenders could significantly strengthen the Bills as they face the Dolphins.
