Last year, during the trade deadline, many anticipated that Kent Hughes would deal veteran David Savard. Now, several months later, as the team struggles early in the season, opinions among fans and media regarding Savard’s future in Quebec are divided. While some advocate trading him, others suggest that Hughes may choose to retain him.
Sportsnet journalist Eric Engels is among those who believe Savard should stay. He recently indicated that he would recommend a contract extension for the veteran, provided it doesn’t hinder the development of younger players like Arber Xhekaj, Justin Barron, and Lane Hutson by limiting their ice time.
Engels emphasized that Savard would need to accept a more restricted role on the ice for this to work.
However, not everyone agrees with this viewpoint. Many still think Hughes should capitalize on Savard’s current market value. As analyst Dennis Bernstein noted, “If Kent Hughes waits for the right moment, he could potentially land a first-round pick, as some teams see Savard as the final piece for a Cup-contending roster—a reliable right-handed defenseman known for shot-blocking and physical play.”
At a salary of $3.5 million this season (which will decrease over time), Savard remains appealing to multiple teams. It remains uncertain whether the Canadiens’ stagnant defensive development will lead Hughes to extend Savard’s contract for a few more years.
The general manager still has time to make a decision, but the trade deadline is approaching quickly.
