Jonathan Quick achieved his 61st career shutout, while Artemi Panarin contributed a goal and an assist, leading the New York Rangers to a 4-0 victory over the Detroit Red Wings on Saturday night.
Panarin, who scored a hat trick during the Rangers’ previous visit to Detroit last month, now boasts 41 points in 25 games against the Red Wings. Jimmy Vesey netted his first goal of the season, with Chris Kreider and Reilly Smith also finding the net. Adam Fox recorded two assists in the victory.
Quick, making his third start of the season, stopped 37 shots, helping the Rangers complete a three-game sweep of their season series with Detroit. This win followed a disappointing 6-1 home loss to the Buffalo Sabres on Thursday.
Detroit’s goaltender Ville Husso, who was making his first appearance since the season opener, made 20 saves after being called up from the Grand Rapids Griffins of the AHL on Friday. The Red Wings were playing the second game of a back-to-back, having lost 3-1 to Toronto the night before.
Entering the game with the league’s 31st-ranked penalty kill, Detroit allowed the Rangers to score first. During a tripping penalty to Simon Edvinsson, Fox fired a slap shot from the right point that Kreider redirected past Husso, with Panarin picking up the second assist.
Despite outshooting the Rangers 19-8 in the second period, Detroit found itself trailing 3-0. Early on, Patrick Kane hit the post, and Quick made a crucial save against Vladimir Tarasenko from close range. During the Red Wings’ first power play, Dylan Larkin also struck the post.
The Rangers capitalized on two opportunities in the period: Vesey scored on a glove-side shot off a behind-the-net setup by Sam Carrick with just over three minutes left, with Zac Jones garnering an assist. Panarin then added his 10th goal of the season just 48 seconds later, receiving a similar setup from Mika Zibanejad, while Alexis Lafreniere assisted.
Smith sealed the game with an empty-net goal at 16:17 of the third period.
