Connor Bedard has made a significant impact on the NHL over the past year and a half, but he is still adjusting to certain aspects of his new role.
Since he was just 12, Bedard has been recognized as a promising talent in Canadian hockey. His journey through the junior circuit with the Regina Pats and Team Canada at the World Juniors led him to be the first overall pick in the 2023 NHL Draft. Since then, he has demonstrated his extraordinary abilities in the league, and the Chicago Blackhawks believe they have secured a foundational player for their franchise’s future.
Given his impressive background and the excitement surrounding him, the NHL is keen on promoting Bedard as a key star for the future, which entails both on-ice and off-ice pressures. This was evident when he participated in the league’s latest commercial alongside fellow stars like Nick Suzuki, Connor McDavid, Sidney Crosby, Jack Hughes, and Auston Matthews. The ad was well-received by fans, highlighting the league’s effort to showcase its top talent. The closing message proclaimed ‘the next golden generation is here,’ which might suggest that Bedard should be thrilled with his prominent role. However, he shared that dealing with the media is actually his least favorite part of being in the NHL, despite the positive reception of the commercial.
“It was fine. It was in Vegas during the player media tour, and we just went from station to station. I think it turned out well and that people enjoyed it,” Bedard commented. “The NHL is doing more to promote us off the ice, and they did a good job. It’s not really enjoyable for me, though. If I liked it, I would be an actor. I’m a hockey player. It’s not my favorite thing, but it’s acceptable.”
Unfortunately for Bedard, as he rises to stardom, the media aspect of his role will likely grow, especially as veteran players like Sidney Crosby and Alex Ovechkin retire. He will need to adapt to this reality moving forward.
