Montreal Canadiens’ young forward Joshua Roy recently reflected on the past several weeks. Despite expectations for him to start the 2024-2025 season in the NHL, he ultimately found himself in the AHL instead.
After a challenging beginning with the Laval Rocket, Roy has rebounded impressively, scoring 12 points in 11 games—including seven goals—after failing to find the net in his first four outings this season.
In a recent interview, Roy candidly discussed his training camp experience. He admitted that it did not meet expectations and acknowledged he wasn’t fully prepared to secure his roster spot, which he ultimately lost.
Speaking with RDS, Roy recognized that his training camp performance was lacking.
“Last year, I got a taste of the NHL, and I think I’ve shown myself that I can play at this level. I acknowledge I didn’t have the best camp,” said Joshua Roy.
This raises the question of when he’ll get another shot in the NHL. Following Oliver Kapanen’s departure to Europe, it was Lucas Condotta, not Roy, who received the call-up to Montreal.
Clearly, the Canadiens aim to develop Joshua Roy into a more well-rounded player with effective forechecking and a stronger two-way game.
This situation is worth monitoring, and it’s encouraging to hear Roy speak with such maturity about his journey.
