College football analyst Paul Finebaum has described Georgia’s most recent playoff ranking as a “complete travesty.”
After suffering their second loss of the season in a game against Ole Miss last week, Georgia’s position in the college football playoff rankings has significantly changed. Previously ranked third, they have fallen to 12th and would be 13th if the playoffs were to begin today.
Many viewers pointed out the disparity in rankings, noting that Georgia was placed ahead of Miami despite having one loss, while Miami was undefeated at that time. The Bulldogs’ loss to a ranked team caused a sharp drop in their ranking, whereas Miami’s defeat to an unranked team resulted in a smaller drop. Among those expressing strong opinions on the rankings was Paul Finebaum. During his appearance on the show “Get Up” on Wednesday, he criticized the committee’s decision, saying, “What the committee stated last night was utterly ridiculous. There’s really no excuse for it. While I recognize they put in hard work, they gather in comfortable settings and discuss college football despite having numerous factors to consider. I’m baffled by the numbers they produced. Georgia began the season playing against Clemson, which was then a top 10 team. Their road schedule has been the toughest in the nation; as highlighted, they’ve faced Alabama, Texas, and Ole Miss, all ranked in the top 10, in addition to Kentucky, which, while not strong, still defeated Ole Miss.”
Ultimately, Georgia needs to secure victories against Tennessee, UMass, and Georgia Tech to reclaim their playoff position. However, given their current strength of schedule, it raises the question of whether the committee is adequately factoring this into their evaluations.
