Alabama football is on a potential path to the SEC Championship game, which could lead to a spot in the College Football Playoff, following Tennessee’s loss to Georgia.
In simple terms, if Alabama wins all its remaining games and other expected winners across the next two weeks do the same, their chances of making it are very strong. Currently, the Crimson Tide holds an 8-2 record, with a 4-2 mark in the SEC, giving them several opportunities to reach the championship.
To qualify for the SEC Championship, they must secure victories in their upcoming games. If they do, they may end up tied with several other teams.
These contenders could include Texas, Texas A&M, Georgia, Ole Miss, or Tennessee. If Georgia, Ole Miss, and Tennessee win their remaining games, it could create a multi-team tie involving them, Alabama, and the losing side of the Texas A&M vs. Texas matchup. For this scenario to unfold, both the Aggies and the Longhorns must win their next SEC games against Auburn and Kentucky, respectively, in which they are heavily favored. In such a case, Alabama is expected to face the winner of the Texas A&M-Texas game in the SEC Championship, determined by conference winning percentages. Alabama’s only barrier to this championship matchup would be if Missouri loses its final games against Mississippi State and Arkansas, or if Tennessee falls to Vanderbilt.
A few weeks ago, it seemed unlikely that Alabama could make it to this point. This season has demonstrated that the SEC’s future, without divisions, will be anything but predictable.
