Graham Coffey from Dawgs Central believes that Georgia quarterback Carson Beck and offensive coordinator Mike Bobo had their legacies at stake during the Bulldogs’ impressive 31-17 victory over Tennessee in Week 12 of college football. He views Tennessee as a consistent opportunity for Georgia to regroup under coach Kirby Smart.
Coffey noted that the Georgia program faced criticism throughout the week, and their dominance felt questioned, as did the legacies of Beck and Bobo. He stated that playing Tennessee is the perfect way to get back on track, highlighting that it marked their eighth consecutive win against the Volunteers, which showcased the team’s true identity.
While the Bulldogs may have rebounded, Smart’s postgame demeanor suggested otherwise. In a televised interview, he criticized the College Football Playoff Selection Committee for its unclear criteria. Smart remarked, “I don’t know…what they’re looking for anymore,” and extended an invitation for committee members to experience the SEC environment firsthand.
Smart’s comments indicate his frustration with the committee’s apparent favoritism toward Big Ten teams. He anticipates that many of those teams will end up competing against each other, similar to what the SEC has been experiencing all season.
With their strong performance against Tennessee, Georgia showed that a spot in the College Football Playoff is still within reach. Beck’s emergence as a championship-level quarterback has the potential to change the Bulldogs’ prospects significantly. If their turnover issues from earlier games against Ole Miss, Florida, and Texas are behind them, Georgia could achieve great things.
Although the defense had an off day, restricting the Vols to just 17 points was a significant accomplishment, especially following last week’s struggles against Ole Miss. The Bulldogs’ upcoming opponents are UMass and Georgia Tech. However, the SEC Championship may be out of reach, as Alabama holds the tie-breaker.
Nonetheless, the possibility of making the College Football Playoff is back on the horizon for Georgia.
