The San Jose Sharks organization experienced concern when it was revealed that rookie and top 2024 draft pick Macklin Celebrini would be sidelined with a lower-body injury. This hip issue kept him out for 12 games, which was disappointing following his achievement of scoring his first NHL goal and assist in the season opener.
Since his return to the Sharks, Celebrini has swiftly showcased his talent as a high-caliber player in the NHL, aligning with the expectations the team had when they selected him first overall this summer. In the 11 games since coming back, he has established himself as the No. 1 center and the team’s primary offensive asset.
One significant area of improvement for the rookie has been his shooting. With an impressively deceptive shot, he can release the puck before opposing goaltenders can properly position themselves. Increased shot volume has also contributed to his success, as evidenced by his five goals in the last 11 games, including one scored during a power play.
His offensive prowess is earning him greater trust and increased playing time from head coach Ryan Warsofsky. Initially, the coach sought to ease Celebrini back into the lineup, but it’s now evident that he is ready to spearhead the offense, regardless of his line assignment.
In his first 12 NHL games, Celebrini is demonstrating strong production with six goals, four assists, and 10 points, two of which are on the power play. Notably, since returning from injury, his performance suggests he’s on track for exceptional rookie statistics. The race for the Calder Trophy has become significantly more competitive, as the Sharks’ top rookie is finally starting to fulfill his potential.
