Where there’s smoke, there’s often fire, and in this instance, it suggests that the Toronto Maple Leafs may be seriously contemplating a trade for a New York Islanders center whose contract is nearing its end.
If the Leafs are aiming to strengthen an offense weakened by injuries, they might be focusing on Brock Nelson as a viable trade option.
TSN’s Mike Johnson mentioned on “OverDrive” last Friday that Nelson is “one to watch” as the trade market heats up ahead of the March deadline. “One other name to watch out for: Brock Nelson,” Johnson noted, referring to his $6 million contract in its final year.
What makes Johnson’s update particularly intriguing is that it’s not the first time Nelson has been connected to Toronto.
Sportsnet’s Luke Fox brought up Nelson on November 16, and James Mirtle from The Athletic mentioned him last Thursday, highlighting his two-way game, versatility throughout the lineup, and goal-scoring abilities.
There is also a link between Nelson and several individuals within the Toronto organization, including players and coaches. Nelson previously played alongside Maple Leafs center John Tavares when both were with the Islanders, and former Islanders coach Lane Lambert is currently an associate coach for Toronto.
At 33 years old, Nelson has scored 107 goals over the past three seasons, averaging nearly 36 goals per year. This season, he has already registered eight goals and 13 points in 21 games.
Despite being on an expiring contract, he comes with a steep $6 million cap hit, part of a six-year, $36 million deal, so it’s reasonable to assume the Maple Leafs would ask the Islanders to retain some salary in a potential trade.
With the Islanders currently sitting at a .500 points percentage and an 8-8-5 record (21 points), placing them 10th in the Eastern Conference, it remains uncertain if GM Lou Lamoriello will decide to make changes.
