The Nashville Predators have sent forward Philip Tomasino to the Pittsburgh Penguins in exchange for a fourth-round pick in the 2027 draft, which was formerly owned by the New York Rangers.
At 23 years old, Tomasino has a cap hit of $825,000 and will become a restricted free agent at the conclusion of the season.
Media Reactions:
Michael Gallagher: “Has any NHL team missed more on their first-round draft picks over the last fifteen years than the Nashville Predators? I don’t think so. ‘20 Yaroslav Askarov: traded after 3 GP; ‘19 Philip Tomasino: traded after 159 GP; ‘17 Eeli Tolvanen: placed on waivers after 135 GP; ‘16 Dante Fabbro: placed on waivers after 315 GP; ‘14 Kevin Fiala: traded after 204 GP; ‘13 Seth Jones: traded after 199 GP; ‘10 Austin Watson: traded after 306 GP.”
Michael Gallagher: “And let’s not forget their array of disappointing second-round picks as well: Egor Afanasyev (traded, now in KHL), Sam Girard (traded), Yakov Trenin (traded), Vladislav Kamenev (traded), Magnus Hellberg (traded), Miika Salomaki (traded), Pontus Aberg (traded), and Grant Mismash (traded).”
Emma Lingan: “In my opinion, the real winner of this trade is Tomasino. It was clear he and the Predators were not a good match. Moving to Pittsburgh will provide him with ample playing time, which is beneficial for his growth. It simply seems like a better fit.”
Robby Stanley: “The signs for Tomasino’s departure have been evident for about two years, across two coaching regimes and two general managers. I’m not at all surprised he was traded. We’ve discussed on the program how this was a likely outcome.”
