The New York Rangers have indicated their willingness to make significant changes to their roster following a series of disappointing losses. Veteran forward Chris Kreider is reportedly among those whose future with the team is uncertain.
In his 13th season in the NHL, Kreider has been an integral part of the Rangers for over ten years, serving as a leader within the team. At 32 years old, he is experiencing a challenging start to the season, but a change of scenery could be beneficial for him for the first time in his career.
This season, Kreider has recorded nine goals and no assists in 19 games, making him a potentially valuable asset for a team with aspirations of winning the Stanley Cup. The Boston Bruins have already begun reshaping their organization by dismissing head coach Jim Montgomery, and they could see Kreider as a top-line left winger to invigorate their lineup.
Both the Bruins and Rangers have not met expectations in the early season, suggesting that a “hockey trade” might be a favorable route. Trent Frederic has emerged in trade discussions and would bring physicality to the Rangers’ roster.
Additionally, Kreider hails from Massachusetts and played at Boston College before entering the NHL, making a return home an appealing prospect for him.
The Calgary Flames, surprisingly doing well in the NHL, currently stand out despite a lack of high-scoring players, as no one has more than 10 goals. With a record of 12-7-3, Kreider’s nine goals would surpass the top scorer on the team. While the Flames might target specific centers, they could also benefit from adding a goal scorer to enhance their playoff chances, as Jonathan Huberdeau leads the team but is known more for playmaking than scoring.
In Los Angeles, the Kings, who bested the Rangers in the 2014 Stanley Cup Final, could provide a fitting environment for Kreider, as they are in need of an additional goal scorer alongside their blend of veteran players and young talent. Kreider could join the likes of Warren Foegele, Kevin Fiala, and Alex Turcotte on the left side.
With two years left on his contract, Kreider would not be a short-term rental if traded. Any team acquiring him would be gaining a motivated scorer eager to contribute.
