While watching recent Canadiens games, one thing stood out to me: Emil Heineman’s effectiveness on the ice. He utilizes his skills well, and even though he plays a secondary role in the Habs lineup, he plays an essential part.
When a player can hit, use their body effectively on the forecheck, and apply pressure with their skating, they become invaluable to an NHL team. Heineman excels in these areas, and he also has a strong shot that allows him to find the back of the net.
Currently, the 23-year-old is tied for fourth in rookie goals, with six this season. Heinenan is projected to reach a total of 19 goals this year, which is impressive. We knew he had potential when he scored seven goals in eleven games after joining Laval, but his performance with the Canadiens has been a pleasant surprise this season.
In my opinion, Heineman should receive a chance to play in the team’s top-six, especially if certain players, like Newhook, continue to underperform. He was the least-utilized player by Martin St-Louis in recent games against the Capitals, Islanders, and Predators.
Could Emil Heineman be the key to saving the Canadiens’ season with a top-six role? No one is claiming that, but if the Canadiens prioritize merit, Heineman deserves more ice time. He brings valuable skills for a player of his size, particularly his shooting ability, and despite his limited experience, he has shown he can contribute to the team. The Canadiens should capitalize on his scoring talent.
