If Kirby Dach doesn’t take on the role of the Canadiens’ second center as intended, Kent Hughes will need to think outside the box. The general manager must find a way to address this gap (at least until Michael Hage is ready), as failing to do so would hinder the team’s ability to compete with the NHL’s top franchises.
Success in the NHL relies on having effective players in the top six, especially at center.
Georges Laraque and Stéphane Gonzalez discussed this issue on their show today, during which Sidney Crosby’s name came up. Georges raised an interesting point: if Crosby were to leave Pittsburgh due to the Penguins’ inability to compete, the team acquiring him would need to have the financial capacity to manage his $8.7 million salary.
Currently, the Canadiens are in a favorable position to accommodate that salary. However, Laraque is really pushing the idea, suggesting that the prospect of Crosby joining Montreal isn’t entirely far-fetched. He believes it’s actually possible and has reasoning to back it up:
Crosby has a history of enjoying hockey markets, and Montreal would suit him well. He also has family in the area, making the idea somewhat feasible.
On the surface, it’s an intriguing proposal, and it’s not the first time it’s been discussed. Yet, for this kind of move to materialize, Crosby would need to decide to leave Pittsburgh, which is a compelling aspect of the situation.
Crosby’s loyalty to the Penguins is well-known, and few would be shocked if he chose to finish his career there. However, if he were to consider a change, it seems likely he would prioritize a winning opportunity—this presents a challenge.
While the Canadiens have promising young players and some prospects on the horizon, it’s unrealistic to expect the team to be in the Stanley Cup contention within the next three years.
Additionally, it’s important to remember that Crosby is now 37, not 32 or 34.
There’s little need to read between the lines; I’m skeptical about this possibility. Of course, I’d love to see it happen, and many of you might feel the same way.
