Sean Avery, who was a fan favorite for the New York Rangers from 2006 to 2012, has expressed interest in replacing Peter Laviolette as head coach.
Avery, who spent two separate terms with the Rangers and concluded his playing career with them in 2012, has remained a devoted supporter since. His frustration with the team’s performance this season has prompted him to seek a solution.
Unlike the average fan, Avery is actively pursuing this opportunity and recently disclosed that he has been in talks with Rangers GM Chris Drury about the head coach position. He has even assembled a potential coaching staff, which includes current Blues assistant coach Steve Ott.
“I have officially put my name in for the head coach position of the New York Rangers. I’ve already contacted my staff and outlined our responsibilities. I’m also considering appointing Steve Ott as a co-head coach.”
Though it would be surprising for the Rangers to replace Laviolette with Avery, such a significant change seems increasingly likely.
NHL insider Elliotte Friedman has indicated that the Rangers are expected to make a substantial move, suggesting that they may struggle to secure a playoff spot in their division.
Could this hint at a coaching transition? It’s a possibility. This could be part of a broader strategy within the organization, which might see both Laviolette and Drury ousted together. Perhaps Sean Avery will indeed take on an influential role with the team soon. We’ll have to wait and see what unfolds.
