Michigan head coach Sherrone Moore seems to be preparing for the 2025 season at the quarterback position by making key moves in the transfer portal to fill a clear gap. Following the departure of Alex Orji, who played significant minutes during the 2024 season, the Wolverines are focused on rebuilding their quarterback lineup.
The latest addition is Mikey Keene, a quarterback from Fresno State, who announced his commitment to Michigan on Monday, as reported by On3’s Hayes Fawcett. He will join a quarterback group that now features Bryce Underwood, a five-star recruit and the top-ranked player in the 2025 class. Underwood recently switched his commitment from LSU to Michigan, aided by financial support from Barstool’s Dave Portnoy and encouragement from Michigan icon Tom Brady.
Keene, a fifth-year senior in 2025, brings valuable experience to a Wolverines offense that faced significant challenges last season. Michigan utilized three quarterbacks—Davis Warren, Jack Tuttle, and Orji—none of whom achieved consistent results. This lack of stability led to the Wolverines finishing 130th out of 134 teams in passing offense, with an average of just 133.6 yards per game. Overall, they accumulated 1,603 passing yards, with 11 touchdowns and 12 interceptions, ranking behind three service academies in passing statistics.
Starting his collegiate journey at UCF before moving to Fresno State, Keene completed 68.7% of his passes over two seasons for a total of 5,868 yards, 42 touchdowns, and 21 interceptions across 24 games. He maintains an average of 211.4 passing yards per game and was recognized with a spot on the Davey O’Brien Award watchlist leading into the 2024 season.
At Michigan, Keene will vie for the starting role or serve as a seasoned backup to Underwood. Through these additions, Moore aims to revitalize an offense that struggled to establish itself after the exit of first-round NFL Draft pick J.J. McCarthy. Regardless of whether Keene or Underwood takes the reins next season, Michigan’s quarterback situation appears much more favorable compared to just a few weeks ago.
