Penn State is set to welcome back a significant defensive player for the 2025 season.
On Monday evening, Zakee Wheatley, a 6-foot-2, 200-pound safety, shared on social media that he intends to utilize his final year of eligibility and return for 2025.
This return is crucial.
The Nittany Lions will be losing their top two safeties, Kevin Winston Jr. (entering the draft) and Jaylen Reed (due to eligibility issues). There is limited experience behind them, as shown by the situation with true freshman Dejuan Lane, who had to step up after Winston’s injury early in the season. Thus, Wheatley’s return is vital for depth at the position.
WHEATLEY’S ROLE
With defensive coordinator Tom Allen implementing a 4-2-5 scheme that requires three safeties, Wheatley’s presence has become increasingly important, especially after Winston’s injury. His playing time surged in the critical late December games, with him participating in an impressive 75 snaps against Oregon in the Big Ten title game and 66 against SMU in the College Football Playoff. He initially played strong safety in the season opener at West Virginia but transitioned to free safety post-injury. Wheatley has performed well, recording two standout 10-tackle games against Wisconsin and Ohio State, finishing the season with 76 tackles, ranking third on the team, along with a forced fumble against Ohio State and an interception against Bowling Green. His efforts earned him an All-Big Ten honorable mention.
WHEATLEY’S STATEMENT
“It’s tough to express how grateful I am to represent the blue and white and play this incredible game in front of the best fans,” Wheatley stated. “Reflecting on our achievements as a team and what lies ahead this season fills me with excitement! The last four years have been remarkable.
“I have matured significantly while at Penn State, thanks to my teammates and coaches. I’m fortunate to have such a supportive group to learn from and compete alongside. I’m thrilled about the playoffs and can’t wait to battle again with my brothers. After contemplating this season and discussing my future with my family, I have chosen to return to Penn State for my final year!”
The No. 6 Penn State Nittany Lions will face No. 3 Boise State in the Fiesta Bowl/College Football Playoff semifinal on New Year’s Eve, with kickoff set for 7:30 PM on ESPN from Arizona.
