In a conversation with ESPN’s Malika Andrews, Warriors superstar Stephen Curry discussed the possibility of retiring from basketball. While he acknowledged that it’s a strange experience for him, he has come to accept it as a natural part of his journey.
Malika Andrews: “How much thought do you put into how much longer you want to play?”
Stephen Curry: “I’ve been thinking about it more than I ever have. It’s alright to recognize that the end is approaching at some point, as it helps you appreciate the present. The more you discuss it and acknowledge it, the more it adds urgency to the current moments.”
At 36, Curry is one of the NBA’s longest-active stars. Selected 7th overall in 2009, he gained prominence during the 2013-14 season when he averaged 24.0 points, 8.5 assists, and 4.3 rebounds per game with a 42.4% shooting rate from three-point range. Over his 15 seasons with the Golden State Warriors, he has become a 10-time All-Star, 2-time MVP, 4-time champion, and 2-time scoring leader.
Though Curry is still performing at a high level this season with averages of 21.8 points and 6.6 assists per game, he has been increasingly contemplating retirement as he nears his 40s. With three years left on his contract, he’s expected to play at least until 2027, when he will be 39.
Beyond that, his future remains uncertain. If he is still healthy and effective, he might consider signing for an additional year or two, particularly if the Warriors are in a position to contend for the championship. Conversely, if the team is not competitive, he could decide to retire sooner.
Regardless of the future, Stephen Curry’s reputation as the greatest shooter in NBA history is already established, and he has nothing left to prove. His drive and determination will keep him competing at a high level until the end.
This season, the Warriors are 16-13 and face challenges to reach the top, but with Curry, Draymond Green, and Jonathan Kuminga, they possess the talent and experience to compete with any team.
Now, it’s up to Warriors GM Mike Dunleavy Jr. to find a suitable trade, but time is of the essence. As Curry continues to accumulate mileage this season, the urgency grows for the organization to make a move to optimize their championship window.
Curry is focused on cherishing these moments and treating each game as if it might be his last. After a legendary career, he’s earned the chance to enjoy his achievements.
Moving forward, only time will tell what will happen. For now, the Warriors’ immediate goal is their game against the Los Angeles Lakers on Christmas Day at 8:00 PM EST. Following that, Curry will lead his team against Kawhi Leonard, James Harden, and the Clippers in Los Angeles at 10:00 PM EST. On December 28th, they will wrap up another back-to-back against the Phoenix Suns at Chase Center at 8:30 PM EST.
