Michigan made a significant move in the transfer portal by securing former five-star running back Justice Haynes from Alabama just days before facing the Crimson Tide at Raymond James Stadium. This decision wasn’t entirely unexpected, as Sherrone Moore and his team had been associated with Haynes since he entered the transfer portal earlier this month, according to Clayton Sayfie of On3.
What’s surprising is that it only took Michigan about four days to finalize the acquisition of the former Alabama standout, outpacing interest from top programs like Ole Miss, Ohio State, and South Carolina. Sayfie indicated that the main competition for Haynes came down to the Wolverines and the Gamecocks.
Reports suggest that Haynes was positioned to secure a $500,000 deal in the transfer portal, as noted by On3’s Pete Nakos. Currently ranked as the top running back in the portal according to On3’s industry rankings, Haynes has an NIL valuation of $397,000.
As Sayfie points out, Michigan’s running back lineup is expected to remain strong in 2025, with three RBs expected to return: sophomore Benjamin Hall and freshmen Jordan Marshall and Micah Ka’apana. The Wolverines will also integrate two new signees in 2025, Jasper Parker and Donovan Johnson.
The most fascinating aspect? The strategic timing of Moore’s move against Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer, just days before they were set to clash in the ReliaQuest Bowl, showcasing effective gamesmanship on the recruiting front.
