One of the SEC’s starting quarterbacks is stepping away from the game.
Brock Vandagriff, the quarterback for Kentucky, has chosen to retire. A spokesperson for the school confirmed this to Jon Hale of the Lexington Herald-Leader on Sunday. Vandagriff had one year left of eligibility but was benched during Kentucky’s final regular season game in favor of freshman Cutter Boley. This raised questions about a potential transfer, but Vandagriff did not enter the transfer portal by Saturday’s deadline, having decided against continuing his football career.
Vandagriff, a former 5-star recruit, started 11 games this season, accumulating 1,593 passing yards, 10 touchdowns, and 8 interceptions, while the Wildcats had a 4-7 record with him at the helm.
Kentucky had high expectations for Vandagriff when he transferred from Georgia after last season, where he played behind Stetson Bennett and Carson Beck, missing opportunities to demonstrate his abilities.
With Vandagriff’s retirement, the starting quarterback position at Kentucky is once again up for grabs, especially following the earlier transfer of another notable QB on the roster.
