Kentucky achieved their first win in SEC conference play by defeating No. 6 Florida 106-100 in a packed Rupp Arena, marking a significant victory. The game featured high scoring, with the Wildcats energized by multiple strong runs that allowed them to surpass the top rebounding team in the nation and one of the best defensive teams.
Despite previous shooting struggles, Kentucky shot 58% overall and 48% from three-point range. They executed three notable scoring runs, including two 10-0 stretches and a pivotal 16-0 run that turned the game around after trailing by 11 points. Key plays contributed to this surge, particularly from Otega Oweh, who inspired his teammates with his energetic play.
Mark Pope discussed Oweh’s impressive competitive spirit and his ability to uplift the team when needed. Pope noted that Oweh, despite facing a previous lackluster performance, maintained his intensity and sparked Kentucky when they struggled to find their rhythm. “Otega’s competitive fire runs deep. What he’s doing this season is incredible. He occasionally breaks our rules, but that’s just Otega being Otega. His contributions and leadership, along with the joy he brings to the team, are truly remarkable,” Pope said.
So far this season, Oweh has averaged a team-high 15.9 points per game and leads the team with 22 steals. He consistently creates scoring opportunities and transitions his strong defense into fast-paced offense. With various talents on the roster, Oweh stands out as a crucial player for Kentucky, particularly evident in their victory over Florida.
