In a recent match, the Vegas Golden Knights experienced a familiar disappointment, believing they had scored at the buzzer during their 2-1 defeat against the New York Rangers at T-Mobile Arena. Unfortunately for them, the clock had already struck zero by the time the puck crossed the goal line.
“This is the second time in this recent homestand that we’ve lost by a goal after scoring at this end with just a tenth of a second left. We needed just one more second, so there’s definitely something going on with our puck luck,” said Vegas coach Bruce Cassidy. “Things aren’t going our way. We’re not getting many fortunate rebounds or easy goals.”
Cassidy emphasized the concept of “puck luck,” which was evident as both Alexander Holtz and Jack Eichel each hit the post during the game. The Rangers’ two goals weren’t due to significant breakdowns by the Golden Knights.
Rangers forward Vincent Trocheck converted a fortunate rebound after a slapshot deflected off his chest, enabling him to score into an empty net. The game-winner came from Adam Edstrom, who tipped a point shot past Ilya Samsonov.
“We allowed two goals tonight. Typically, at home, that’s enough for us to win. Usually, it is,” Cassidy noted. “That’s been the case 95% of the time this year, but not tonight.”
