In a development that surprises absolutely no one among Wisconsin Badger fans, Landyn Locke, a former commitment to Wisconsin, has chosen to play for Sam Houston State. This choice aligns with the hiring of former offensive coordinator Phil Longo, who has taken on the role of head coach after being let go by Luke Fickell and the Badgers.
Landyn Locke expressed his excitement about joining the Bearkats through a tweet, indicating his commitment to the new program. Initially set to join the Badgers as a freshman next season and compete for a position behind his brother, Braedyn Locke, on the depth chart, both brothers will now be leaving Wisconsin. Braedyn made the decision to transfer to the Arizona Wildcats at the end of the last season, influencing Landyn’s decision to also exit.
Longo will now have the opportunity to develop his future quarterback at Sam Houston State instead of Wisconsin. In addition to Landyn, Mabrey Mettauer has also transferred to Sam Houston State earlier in the transfer cycle.
Longo built his reputation as the offensive coordinator for the Bearkats, leading them to a 12-1 record and an impressive average of 547 yards of offense in his final year with the team. After stints at Ole Miss, North Carolina, and finally Wisconsin, his approach did not fit the Badgers’ needs, as evidenced by the team’s 5-5 record before Fickell ended Longo’s tenure, although it may have been viewed as a scapegoat decision.
As the Badgers move forward, they are entrusting new offensive coordinator Jeff Grimes with the task of rejuvenating the offense and the team as a whole. Wisconsin has brought in two new transfer quarterbacks, Billy Edwards Jr. from Maryland and Danny O’Neil from San Diego State, to compete for the starting position.
