The Pittsburgh Steelers are facing a crucial offseason in 2025. General Manager Omar Khan has taken a proactive approach over the last two seasons, and it will be interesting to see how he tackles this offseason, which presents numerous significant questions. The team has opportunities to make moves in several positions, particularly at wide receiver, but achieving this will require utilizing cap space. Some roster players may be released to save money, as they are seen as potential cap casualties.
While the Steelers have several upcoming free agents, they could face even more if they choose to cut players before their contracts expire. Obvious candidates for release include Larry Ogunjobi and Cole Holcomb. Holcomb has been recovering from a severe knee injury for over a year and might benefit from a fresh start. Ogunjobi’s contract has long been viewed unfavorably, and his release appears likely.
Over The Cap identified both Holcomb and Ogunjobi as potential cuts, considering factors such as their 2025 salaries and recent performances. Left guard Isaac Seumalo was also mentioned as a potential candidate, which may surprise some given that he struggled during the 2024 season due to an early injury that hindered his performance. Seumalo signed a three-year deal worth $24 million with the Steelers before the 2023 season and carries a $10.19 million cap hit in 2025.
Releasing Seumalo could save the team approximately $7.87 million against the 2025 cap, providing more flexibility in free agency. He is set to receive a base salary of $6.875 million, plus a $1 million roster bonus that kicks in on the third day of the new league year in 2025 (March 14). If the Steelers are to part ways with Seumalo, it would be before this date to maximize savings.
The team’s offensive line is expected to undergo significant changes in 2025. Starting left tackle Dan Moore Jr. will enter free agency, likely leaving the team, while Broderick Jones is anticipated to return to his natural position at left tackle. Second-year player Troy Fautanu should be fully recovered and ready to play right tackle by the start of the 2025 season.
Zach Frazier is expected to remain the center, with Mason McCormick at right guard, unless James Daniels is re-signed. If Seumalo is released, it’s likely the Steelers will need to replace him with either a draft pick or another free agent.
