Both the Detroit Red Wings and New York Rangers, teams that entered the season with high expectations, now find themselves outside of the playoff race. Could a trade provide a solution to their struggles?
It has become increasingly clear that Chris Drury, GM of the New York Rangers, is likely to be a seller as the March 7 trade deadline approaches.
After trading captain Jacob Trouba to the Anaheim Ducks and winger Kaapo Kakko to the Seattle Kraken last month, defenseman Ryan Lindgren is now rumored to be the next player on the move from New York.
According to Remy Mastey of The Hockey News, citing Frank Seravalli from Daily Faceoff, Lindgren may be a suitable addition for the Detroit Red Wings, who are looking to strengthen their defense as they pursue a playoff spot under new head coach Todd McLellan. Seravalli raised questions about whether Lindgren would significantly improve the Red Wings, and how much they are willing to invest in acquiring him.
With the potential of becoming an unrestricted free agent after this season, Lindgren’s future in New York is uncertain, positioning him prominently in trade discussions.
Currently, the Rangers are outside the playoffs and unless their situation dramatically improves, Drury may continue to focus on rebuilding for the future. This season, Lindgren has contributed two goals, eight assists, and a total of 10 points in 37 games, averaging nearly 20 minutes of ice time per game, while holding a -4 rating. His affordable contract and consistency could make him appealing to Detroit.
Unless the Rangers find a way to turn their season around, Drury is expected to remain a seller at the trade deadline, and Lindgren is likely to be one of the players moved.
