Xavier Lucas appears to be in a difficult position regarding his attempt to transfer from Wisconsin Badgers football, as the Big Ten has expressed its support for the school’s efforts to block his move to Miami Hurricanes.
However, his attorney is undeterred. In an extensive statement on X, Darren Heitner outlined seven points that challenge Wisconsin’s response to the Lucas situation.
Wisconsin expressed disappointment in Lucas’s withdrawal from the institution under unfortunate circumstances. The school referred to the existing agreement with Lucas about financial compensation and Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) deals that they believe should be adhered to. Additionally, the university accused Miami of tampering, claiming that the program engaged with Lucas before he officially entered the transfer portal.
“We possess credible information regarding improper contact between Xavier and personnel from the University of Miami football program before he requested to enter the transfer portal. Interfering with a player’s commitments and contractual obligations is against NCAA tampering regulations and legal standards.”
In response, Lucas’s lawyer highlighted seven rebuttals. Earlier this month, Heitner criticized Wisconsin for allegedly preventing his client from transferring to another school, despite NCAA rules that require football programs to accommodate a player’s transfer request within two days of their announcement. Although Lucas declared his intent to enter the transfer portal on December 20, he claimed that, after eight days, Wisconsin obstructed his ability to communicate with other schools.
Heitner also challenged Wisconsin’s statement regarding NIL, suggesting that their approach is “subservient to NCAA rules.” Furthermore, he pointed out that the football program leveled accusations without providing any supporting evidence.
