Former Purdue running back Tyrone Tracy Jr. has been recognized as a member of the PFWA NFL All-Rookie Team after achieving 839 rushing yards and five touchdowns with the New York Giants. The transition from wide receiver to running back has proven successful for Tracy, who was drafted in the fifth round of the 2024 NFL Draft.
In his debut season with the Giants, Tracy not only rushed for 839 yards and five touchdowns, but also added 284 receiving yards and a touchdown from 38 catches. He ranked third among NFL rookies in both rushing yards and rushing touchdowns.
Tracy made a significant impact in an October 6 game against Seattle, where he ran for 129 yards on 18 carries, helping secure a 29-20 win. This marked one of three occasions he surpassed 100 rushing yards throughout the season. Later, on October 28, he dominated with 145 yards and a touchdown against the Pittsburgh Steelers. He reached the 100-yard milestone once more on November 10, accumulating 103 rushing yards and a touchdown against the Carolina Panthers.
Beginning his college football career at Iowa, Tracy transferred to Purdue for the 2022 season. Initially playing as a receiver, he switched to running back during the 2023 season under Ryan Walters, a change he believes was crucial for his NFL draft prospects. Tracy explained that while he might have been seen as an average receiver, his attributes as a running back—including speed and size—made him a more valuable player.
During his final year at Purdue, Tracy recorded 716 rushing yards and eight touchdowns, as well as 19 receptions for 132 yards, showcasing his skill in receiving from the backfield. This versatility made him an attractive pick for the Giants, and the decision to switch positions has benefited both Tracy and the team.
