The New York Rangers have emerged as the leading candidate to acquire J.T. Miller, but the Carolina Hurricanes are now considered a strong contender as the anticipated trade approaches.
In recent weeks, it has become clear that Miller’s departure from Vancouver is imminent, with the Hurricanes seemingly becoming the preferred choice for the 31-year-old player. NHL insider Elliotte Friedman has nearly confirmed this, indicating in his latest 32 Thoughts article that both Carolina and New York have received permission to discuss Miller’s trade.
Friedman mentioned, “The Hurricanes and Rangers are two of the teams with permission to talk to J.T. Miller.” While the Rangers have previously attempted to create trade offers that didn’t materialize, the Hurricanes present a compelling opportunity to strengthen their second center position, currently held by Jack Drury and/or Jesperi Kotkaniemi, arguably making them the top team in the Eastern Conference.
At this stage, it’s uncertain what more needs to be done for a team to secure Miller, especially since a deal with New York reportedly fell through due to stipulations regarding a draft pick. However, with numerous teams showing interest, it seems only a matter of time before a trade is finalized, with many anticipating it could happen soon.
Other teams, including the Boston Bruins, New Jersey Devils, Dallas Stars, or even a surprise contender, shouldn’t be overlooked in the race for Miller. Nevertheless, given his preference to remain in the Eastern U.S. rather than move to Canada, it would be surprising if either Carolina or New York do not end up completing this trade.
