Mike Vrabel has returned to the New England Patriots as head coach, reminiscent of the Bill Belichick era. However, his time in this role will not include Brian Belichick, who is departing after five seasons as the safeties coach, as reported by ESPN. Brian had been part of the team since 2016, serving in various capacities under his father. He continued with the Patriots during Jerod Mayo’s brief tenure after Bill Belichick’s departure in 2024, following a 24-year period that included six Super Bowl victories. The reasons behind Brian’s exit remain unclear, as does whether he has other opportunities lined up. Following a year away, Bill Belichick has taken the head coaching position at the University of North Carolina, where his other son, Steve Belichick, is now the defensive coordinator after stints on his father’s Patriots staff and a season at the University of Washington. As of Tuesday afternoon, there are no reports indicating Brian Belichick will join his father’s staff at UNC. Meanwhile, it’s uncertain who will take over Brian’s role in New England. The Patriots brought in Vrabel to succeed Mayo, who was let go after just one year following Bill Belichick’s long tenure. Vrabel, a former linebacker for the Patriots under Belichick, previously coached the Tennessee Titans from 2018 to 2023 and has appointed longtime Belichick ally Josh McDaniels as his offensive coordinator, signifying his initial actions as head coach.
