The Oregon Ducks struggled for most of the game but eventually found a way to disrupt Wisconsin’s rhythm, allowing them to claw back into contention and ultimately force overtime. In the extra period, the Ducks’ strategy continued to pay off, leading to a surprising victory over the Badgers, which proved to be a tough loss for Wisconsin.
Head coach Greg Gard expressed his frustration regarding his team’s second-half performance at home during the post-game press conference, emphasizing how they fell apart.
“Credit goes to Oregon for making us play out of character, especially in the last eight minutes. I felt we lacked the aggressiveness we had in the first half,” Gard stated.
Oregon’s pressure forced Wisconsin into uncomfortable situations, resulting in 17 turnovers that the Ducks capitalized on for 24 points. Steven Crowl was specifically targeted, recording six turnovers himself. While he acknowledged Oregon’s effective play, Gard ultimately believed his team beat themselves.
“We can’t wallow in self-pity. It’s hard for everyone because we largely defeated ourselves,” Gard remarked.
He noted that the team became hesitant as the game progressed, which was evident in their statistics: 17 turnovers and zero free throws in the closing stretch. As Zach Heilprin pointed out, Wisconsin did not attempt a free throw in the final 27 minutes and 34 seconds. Aggressive teams excel at drawing fouls by attacking the basket and creating contact, but the Badgers failed to maintain that aggression in the critical moments.
“We can’t afford to be tentative and passive. We perform well when we are aggressive, and it’s clear that we struggle when we aren’t,” Gard stressed.
The Wisconsin Badgers will have an opportunity to rebound on Tuesday when they face off against the Washington Huskies.
