Matching Red Bull’s DRS switch performance has been a challenge for Aston Martin, according to their Formula 1 performance director Tom McCullough. Red Bull has gained more straightline speed than other teams with an open DRS since the introduction of current regulations in 2022. Aston Martin has been working hard to catch up and their latest iteration rear wing was seen on the AMR23 at the Abu Dhabi GP last month.
However, optimising the DRS switch has been difficult due to the compromises involved in producing downforce and reducing drag. McCullough says that getting a stable aerodynamic platform with a big reach when the DRS is open is the aim, and that there has been a lot of development in this area by various teams. The wing trialled in Abu Dhabi performed well in correlation tests.
